I have been painting and drawing since I was a very young child. One of the paintings in this gallery (Falling) was done when I was about 10 years old. Recently, I was told it was "very deep". I was asked what I was thinking when I did it. My reply was that I was 10 years old and have no idea what I was thinking. It is one of the few oil paintings I have ever done. For over 50 years it hung in my mother's house and I only reacquired it on her death. I grew up close to Killarney, Ontario, in the Georgian Bay area of Lake Huron. This is where the famous Group of Seven Canadian artists painted. Their work always appeared true to me. They showed Northern Ontario the way it is. I have travelled the world and still think - with its granite rocks, lakes and forests - it is one of the most beautiful places in the world. I like to paint it. It always brings back warm, pleasant memories, as a boy, sitting in a canoe doing charcoal drawings of spruce at the tip of the big island in Lake Kakakiwagunda.
